I owe much of my success to the Strome College of Business with a big part of that being the internship fair that is put on every year. It was at one of these fairs where I discovered the company I represent today, Northwestern Mutual. During my time at Strome, I received endless support from the faculty there including, but not limited to, Maureen Stiner, Dennis Harvey, Dr. Mark Lane, Kelley Alvey, and Dr. Bruce Rubin. I owe much of my success in passing the Certified Financial Planner exam on the first try to Dr. Rubin. He is the one who encouraged me to take advantage of the CFP certificate program the university offered as opposed to going with an online self-study course.

Having an in person live instructor is very helpful when dealing with the complexity of topics the CFP exam presents. I was able to enjoy courses taught by Mark Flaherty and Walter McDaniel who are both CFPs themselves and work in the industry which made for a much more practical approach to teaching.

I enjoy regularly coming back to the university to give talks to the finance club and other organizations and teach a series the athletic department puts on called life after athletics.

As Editor-in- Chief, Angela oversees the editorial content for all publications, ensuring that the tone and stories reflect each magazine's overall goals and vision.

Working with a regular team of freelance writers and a small staff of editorial assistants, Angela gathers feature and department story ideas by keeping abreast of local news, trends and people of interest. She also familiarizes herself with other city and regional publications and the content they're producing. "I'm passionate about working for a city and lifestyle publication that celebrates our region and engages our readers," she shares. "National publications have their own set of admirable characteristics, but I really enjoy getting to know our readers and covering stories that they can connect with.

It's makes the entire process more personal." A 2009 alumna of ODU, Angela obtained a BA in English with an emphasis in journalism. "I truly enjoyed my time at ODU," she says. "It was invaluable having the chance to learn from professors like Jim Raper, Joyce Hoffmann, and Joe Cosco, who not only gave us the fundamentals of journalism but could also incorporate their own real-life experiences to paint a more realistic picture of the world in which we were about to embark."

Program Student Accomplishment - Capsim Spring 2017 Capstome Challenge

Jordan Stewart, an MBA student of Professor Anil Nail, triumphed against other business students all over the world in an international business simulation competition.

Thousands of the best students from more than 20 countries around the world including Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Lebanon, Mexico, Kuwait, Thailand, Turkey, the West Indies and the United States who have used the business simulator in their courses compete in the biannual competition.

Capsim President Reda Chafai said "It's a deep dive into high pressure international business...finalists have to run their simulated companies to a strict timetable over eight simulated years in eight hours. In some countries that means competing overnight. As any global executive knows, there's no nine-to-five in business today so it's great preparation for the rigors of a business career."

The capsim simulation is used in Professor Anil's Strategy course Stewart took with other classmates. Professor Anil says "The simulation offers students the challenges involved in managing the complexity of an enterprise, and dealing with uncertainties - particularly the challenges of forecasting and strategic planning in an uncertain environment." Jordan shared a similar sentiment about the competition saying, "The simulation highlights how certain decisions impact many facets of a company," adding that what he most enjoyed about the experience was "discovering opportunities to improve my competitive advantage."

Jordan is the first of Professor Anil's students to place in the top 10 in the global capsim challenge. Winners enter the Capsim Challenge Hall of Fame and receive a $400 American Express voucher for a dinner or victory party.
